{About}

Food is about life, culture, sensuality, healing, connection, artistry, alchemy, and soul.  Along with all those things, by virtue of the fact that I’m an artist who creates as a form of self exploration and prayer, food for me is also a practice.  Practice meaning that its something I try to engage in consciously, fully engaging in all aspects of its preparation.  And well… practice also meaning that I have yet to master the act of approaching food in a mindful healthful manner all the time. And so?  I practice.

This blog is about food.  Good food, cooking food, going out and finding food, celebrating food, exploring the healing and nourishment that food provides as well as current food news and events.  Oh… and food porn.  I mean… who doesn’t love a good photograph of food?

I’m not a chef, and often times what I make is based on my own estimates.  I will share recipes here, and will work hard at coming up with exact amounts, but that’s not how I naturally cook, unless its from a recipe in a book.  I’m also totally gluten intolerant and much of what I write about will reference this.

The rest is an evolving journey really.  I’m a vegetarian, trying out meat here and there for the first time in over 10 years, and I’m a sensualist, meaning that really… for me its always about how good it tastes, looks and smells.  Because the practice isn’t just about being mindful in what I eat, but also in being present with how alive and great I feel in that moment when savoring some delicious morsel of something well prepared.

I invite you to join me in this exploration and celebration.  I would love for this blog to become a gathering place to discuss our individual food experiences, ideas, questions, indulgences and resources – much like a dinner table surrounded by good friends would do.

Please grab a cup of finely steeped tea, sit back and welcome.

P.S.  I write about other things, create things like sacred adornments and mixed media art, and dabble in the business end of managing a creative career.  If you are interested in being in the know about whats going on please subscribe to my newsletter here.

Melinda,

I have to say that a DSLR is an awesome tool to have, but they do say that the best camera is the one in your hand. So work whatever you have girl! I think its really a matter of practice and developing your own ‘eye’ for things!

Thanks for stopping by, looking forward to getting to know you. :)

Passerò a trovarti ancora. Ti auguro un buon week end, a presto.

Hi Elena,
Beautiful blog and pictures. I love how you mentioned mindful eating, I feel like everyone should take the time to fully experience their food and take the time to enjoy, no rush.

I agree Tram. Eating mindfully isn't just about our health but its about our quality of life as a whole. Life is too short to not savor the amazing variety of flavors out there!

Hi Elena,

We received a request from Urbanspoon user "Food Practice" claiming that they are the author of Food Practice. It sounds like you, but I'm writing to verify that this is the case and that you want to allow "Food Practice" to manage your blog on Urbanspoon.

You can visit the Urbanspoon page for Food Practice here: http://www.urbanspoon.com/br/37/3828/Hawaii/Food-…

Please reply and let me know whether or not we should approve this claim.

Thanks!

Nice to "meet" you, Elena! I see you've written about Viento y Agua and Lola's so I'm guessing you are a Long Beach resident like me :)

Bella, I used to be, but for the last three years, I've been living in Idyllwild. But I never stopped loving all thing Long Beach *sighs* Whenever I go down into LA county I make a stop at Viento and Lola's and a very stalkerish drive by my old and lovely apartment.
