On Monday of this last week, Jon and I sputtered back into Kerobokan (Seminyak) after a weekend on the other side of the island in Lovina. It was a 4 1/2 hour motorcycle ride from one beach to the other, with a massive crater in the middle of that journey. It was gorgeous, adventurous and so so exhausting. My bum took about 3 days to recover.
We were hungry and it amused me later as we were eating that the one food we were clear we wanted to eat was Mexican. Happily, there are a few really good Mexican food restaurants here. but I wondered… is it officially slow traveling when we land in Indonesia and still have a considerable amount of Mexican food?
I’m not going to sweat that too much because… Mexican food. Enough said.
It’s likely a product of the fact that we were both born and reared in Southern California and also… Mexican food. I mean… I struggle to really come up with a cuisine that is any better, but this is a discussion or debate for another time.
Suffice it to say, I look for Mexican food pretty much anywhere I might be in the world and that won’t change. it does however fuel my fantasies of what life will be like when we head over to Mexico for several months next year.
The other thing I’m noticing is that I’m eating a lot of chicken. It’s not something I want to do a lot of here, because there is no way to really know what the quality of treatment is for any of the animals whose meat we can eat here in Bali. But I’m craving it a lot, which is new for me. I’m going with it, trusting my body knows what it is needing right now.
Jon and I have also found a cafe we love to work at. The problem has become however, that we both have a tone of work to do and have been hanging out there from early morning until late evening. After a decent sized breakfast and late lunch, neither one of us are hungry for dinner so we have their Sexy Nutty Smoothie which is beyond delicious and ties me over until the very next day with no hunger.
Oddly, it also mitigates that the cafe gets hot for me in the evening and the idea of eating food when I’m overheated, doesn’t appeal at all. The smoothie is cool and refreshing, doing the trick just fine.
All that said, I’m on a few deadlines, and though the food I’m eating is healthy and fresh, I’m feeling a bit perfunctory about eating of late. My mind is on other things, and more often than not, I’d rather be working than connecting with the food I’m eating or with Jon who is eating with me. By the end of this week, I was really feeling the depletion this has been causing.
