Cane & Taro in Lahaina, Hawaii

May 26, 2010 by Elena Rego 12 Comments

Cane & Taro Restaurant

Last night was the last of the Brown family gatherings.  One by one, each family member has flown home after two weeks of festivities celebrating Jon’s mother, Linda’s graduation.  Its just 5 of us now and for one last hurrah we went to Cane & Taro.  I must say there had been a lot of talk of this place and so going was a bit exciting.  But I have to admit that we have eaten out quite a bit in the last two weeks, and my body is done.  D. O. N. E. done.  But I’m glad that I got to go to this place.

Tuesdays and Wednesdays offer a 50% off menu from 5PM to 6PM.  Its an amazing deal and we all took advantage of it.  The entire table order a series of pupus (appetizers) and I order an actual dinner.  Most of the pupus had some form of gluten in them, so I opted for something a bit safer.  Lets start with my first item shall we?

Dirty Dry Vodka Martini

Have I mentioned here, yet, that I’m a total Martini whore?  Well… I am.  And not just any Martini, thank you.  Its a Dirty Dry Vodka Martini with Kettle One or Grey Goose, because that’s how I roll.  A drink is a personal thing, and I’m not really going to review it since the truth is, what one person likes is completely different from the other.  Suffice it to say that I like mine super dirty, and even though the way I order it dictates the exact ingredients, they won’t ever taste the same from place to place.  So this one for me was ok.  Not spectacular, but ok.

The pupus looked gorgeous and there were too many to list here.  But I did enjoy the Garlic Endamame, which was a great touch on an already fun appetizer.  I hadn’t ever seen it offered with garlic before, and just like with the Martini, I’m a garlic whore.  (hmmm, see a theme here?) Jon ordered the Mango & Crab Salad Handroll.  I didn’t eat this, but it was gorgeous, and he loved it.

My dinner plate was quite simply orgasmic.  Yes.  I said orgasmic.  I have forgone my vegetarian ways for a while and am eating more seafood these days.  I saw this dish and knew that it was exactly what I wanted, with a slight change to make it gluten free, of course.  I ordered the Classic Roasted Monster Garlic Prawns that come with seasonal vegetables served with Fettuccine.  In place of the Fettuccine, I asked for their garlic mashed potatoes and it worked out perfectly.  The sauce, the prawns, the vegetables… all of it savory, fresh and delicious.  I have to say, I just kept moaning with each bite.  That’s the way it should be no?

Our friends, Jonathan and Sanam are coming over for an extended visit in a few weeks and we’ll be taking them to Cane & Taro when we are up for a night out.  It was that good, and I highly recommend going.  Especially on a Tuesday or Wednesday!

By the way, I included you in my first-ever list of awards. For some reason I remember reading somewhere on your site (but can't find it now) that you don't participate in awards. If that's the case, please don't feel pressured to do anything, but I hope you will accept it as the compliment it is intended to be:
