This Week’s CSA Box

January 6, 2012 by Elena Rego 6 Comments

We received our CSA (Community Supported Agriculture) box 2 days ago, but I’ve been so busy I only now got around to taking a picture.  Some of the goodies have already been eaten too!

Buried under the tomatoes and basil is a papaya.  Jon loves those and immediately ate one when we opened the box.  I’m not a big fan, so those are for him.

Looking at this though, I’m thinking about grilling the zucchini and the leaks, possibly using the yams in a soup, using the butter leaf lettuce to wrap a raw sunflower seed pate in, and of course the tomatoes and basil need some fresh mozzarella to create perfection.

Because it’s just Jon and I, we order the small organic box, but I’m thinking that it may make more sense to order the large box.  Every dish we cook at home is vegetarian and I would like these boxes to rendered at least 3 full meals a week.

What I’m finding though is that we get a lot of lettuces. Which I love, don’t get me wrong, but it’s shifting my eating towards more salads.  Good for me, possibly too boring for Jon.

Oh!  And not shown here are about 6 bok choys.  Other then stir fry, what can I do with them?  I was thinking of roasting them for a bit and then pouring a sauce of some sort over them.  Any suggestions?

I make a spicy coconut milk based dish with bok choy. They are good cleaned and grilled, in soups, curries, wilted and put in a frittata. They’re so useful!

Are you getting the Kula Fields box?

Hi Amanda, Yes, its Kula Fields. Grilled might be fun. I'll do that. I got this amazing salt the other day. Its guava wood smoked, I think the brand was Tiki Salt Something. I got rid of the bag and placed it in an air tight container. In any case, little sprinkle of that over something grilled makes it simply amazing. I'll try it on the bok choy this weekend.

Mmm. this harvest looks delicious! We steam our bok choy and drizzle Braggs Amino Acids over them when they are done. Even our six year old likes them that way 🙂

Bok choy is yummy in miso soup. I like to pour mine over rice for a hearty meal:)

Oh wow! This is so inspiring! I believe we have something like your CSA boxes here in Phoenix as well–and this week I am definitely going to look into it! What a beautiful treat for each week!! And–I had to chuckle about the papaya. I'm exactly the same way–Hansel loves that stuff, but I'm sorry–it smells too much like barf to me that I just can't get over it!!

    BIG Hugs!
