Food (real) is at it’s core Life. It sustains, nourishes, perpetuates, enlivens.
This is the gift of food.
Food’s sustaining, nourishing and Life amplifying qualities go beyond the nutrients that feed our physical bodies. It extends to the pleasure of taste, the connection to the land the food came from, the choices and the beauty on our plate that feeds our soul. Food also carries with it story, culture, history and our connection to all that has come before us.
Imagine the history of a whole ingredient (tomato cabbage, pepper etc), how humankind discovered it was edible, the countless ways it’s been used on it’s own and in combination with other ingredients to make countless dishes. History – deep and long and ancient.
Each time we take in food we are in union with Life and all of its history, culture, and heart beat of this planet up until the very moment of consumption. Cultivating food, harvesting it, preparing it, eating it, sharing it with others is holy union with Life. It’s very much a communion with the divine no matter what your cosmology is.
Our relationship with food is a sacred dance with Life and how we exist in it’s miraculous fabric.
The Measurement Of Worth
The quality of that your relationship with food is a potent litmus test for measuring how you value yourself in the grand scheme of things.
The times that I have eaten out of emotional despair when life was hard and disappointing, when I was hating myself because I was buying into the illusion that I was not worthy of anything, I ate food that was heavy, processed, salty to the nth degree and in general things that weren’t fresh, weren’t pretty and created to deliver the most calories for the least amount of nutritional and Life force value.
This wasn’t on purpose, but it was a very direct reflection of the value I was unconsciously placing on my life.
The times in my life when I’m in the gorgeous groove of personal work, self facing, self love, meditation practices designed to keep me standing in the light of truth? I’m craving and reaching for beauty, freshness, food filled with Sun, with the pulse of the planet and bursting with flavors I helped bring out in the sacred alchemy of my own kitchen.
This is often not on purpose either. It is simply a reflection of my internal dance with my sense of self worth and my connection with Love and Life.
Implications On The Personal + Global Levels
You are only ever able to love life to the extent that you can love yourself. And this can be a hard truth to accept, because so many of us strive so hard to love those in our lives so much more than what we are able to manage for ourselves.
It’s a heartbreaking journey.
But just like how you feed yourself food is how you feed yourself Life (or receive from it), we treat the earth and we treat the growing and the production of food the same level of regard and respect as we treat ourselves. The individual psychology and soul absolutely amplifies and affects the collective unconscious.
So we have mono crops that drain the soil, deplorable factory farming of animals that is both inhumane to the animals we are farming as it is to the land and the environment. We keep pushing to modify the genetic make up of food to the disregard of it’s already perfect balanced nature. We strip whole food of what makes it whole and pure and then repackage it with chemicals, fillers, fake colors in order to put it in plastic, styrofoam, and cardboard and sell it for profit. We poison ourselves and the planet with *food*.
We take the most beautiful bounty from our planet, denature it, strip it of its life force, repackage it as food and then put it on our plates.
Everyone gets short changed in this process. Less nutrition, less Life, less body health, less soil health, less planet health.
It’s like the unconsciousness of reaching for a bag of chips when things are going badly for us, we place profit and mass production in a higher place of importance than honoring the beauty of Life and the union it’s inviting us into.
My Aim Here
I’ve carved out a place on this website to discuss the broader political arena of food on this planet, but that conversation isn’t anywhere near as important to me as this conversation here.
And it’s this: it’s not so much what we are eating as it is how much we are embracing, forgiving, loving and caring for ourselves.
Lets start there. Let’s start with the practice of telling ourselves that we are holy, beautiful, and worthy of the purest beauty and Life force this planet has to offer. Because we are an expression of Life. We are an expression of the divine. You guys… by virtue of the fact that you breathe and are here to express the uniqueness of you… you are sacred and holy and worthy of the purist love there is.
You can give that to yourself. I hold space for all of us to give this to ourselves.
Feed Yourself
There is so much more to this conversation. Economics, access, locality all play heavily into the conversation of how we feed ourselves. I know.
But start easy. Start with the moment in front of you. Next time you’re hungry, ask yourself,
“What can I eat right now, that is in access to my economics, home etc, that will nourish me the most? What will give me most pleasure, most nourishment, and most intimate connection with Life and nature?”
Work with what you have. Just asking yourself the question begins a profound shift that will work on you behind the scenes while you go through your days.
I send you all deep love.
