Lime Zest And Sugar… The Sweetest Gift

January 7, 2013 by Elena Rego 5 Comments

A while back I wrote about the amazing lime bounty I was getting from my friends Roxanne and Shane.  Their tree just bursts with limes every year and they are wonderfully generous with their fruit.  At one point I had so many that I froze the juice, but also kept the zest, in order to preserve it and make lime zest sugar.  I ended up with so much, I turned them into gifts that everyone I gave them to loved.

Lime Zest Sugar

  • Organic Limes
  • Organic Sugar

1.  Zest you limes and add the zest of one lime per 2 cups of sugar!  That’s it.

2.  Mix.

3.  Store in an air tight container.  Will remain super fresh for up to 6 months, then starts losing it’s zing.

Your lime zest sugar is great for cocktails, baking, and flavoring teas.  I’ve used it in all of those ways, and I love it.  It can also be used as a facial scrub!  But be careful, lime zest is a pretty potent punch of lime oil, and can irritate sensitive skin.  Test it out on the inside of your arm first.

    Love this!
Another thing to try, if they share another robust harvest, is lime zest mixed with freshly ground pepper, kosher salt and a smidge of dried jalapenos(from Penzeys Spices!). Probably, 1/4 cup salt, 1/4 cup pepper, 1/4 cup zest and about a TBS jalapeno. This is great on chicken or flank steak on the grill for fajitas! even good on the peppers and onions for fajitas(just toss veggies with a bit of oil, then the seasoning), grill and scarf!!!!
Thanks so much for the sweet version…..you are right, my tea will never be the same!
